FAQs

What is herringbone flooring?
expand

Floor fitters create herringbone flooring by laying a pattern of rectangular wooden boards in a staggered formation, where each plank meets the end of another at a 90-degree angle. The result is a distinctive broken zig-zig parquet flooring pattern that creates rhythm, texture, and visual interest across the floor.

What’s the difference between herringbone and chevron?
expand

Herringbone and chevron are often confused—but they’re two distinct patterns, each with its own design impact.

The blocks that make up a herringbone floor are rectangular with the ends meeting at 90-degree angles. This parquet pattern has a more traditional, textured look.

With a chevron floor pattern, the boards are cut at 45-degree angles (sometimes 60-degree angles) and set against each other so that the ends join in a point. This forms a continuous ‘V’ shape to create a sleek, modern, directional aesthetic. Chevron flooring, with its clean arrow-like design, is often used to make a room look wider or longer.

How do I maintain herringbone flooring?
expand
  • Regular Cleaning:  Regularly dust your floors with a non-abrasive, lint-free mop to remove dust and dirt that can scratch the surface. For deeper cleaning, use a mop with a specialist cleaner specifically designed for timber floors.
  • Protect from Moisture: Wipe up spills promptly to prevent water from seeping into the timber and causing damage. Use doormats at entryways to reduce the amount of dirt and moisture brought in from outside.
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Use cleaning products that are appropriate for timber floors. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that can damage the finish.
  • Furniture Pads: Place felt or rubber pads under furniture legs to prevent scratches and dents. Avoid dragging heavy furniture across the floor.
  • Maintain Finish: Depending on the finish (oil or lacquer), periodic reapplication may be needed to maintain the floor’s protective layer. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for refinishing or re-coating.
