Brown Oak
Brown oak is oak naturally coloured by the bracket fungus Fistulina hepatica, commonly called the “beefsteak fungus” due to its blood red colour. Sites on mature trees where branches have fallen off will attract the fungus and the colouring start at the site of the ‘wound’ and slowly penetrate the thickness of the tree. This natural process creates a mix of white and brown in some trees, running to solid brown at the core. Due to the infrequency of this natural process, Brown oak is rare and considered to be very valuable. Brown Oak can be durable, hard and strong and makes for great timber flooring.
