Our Process
1. Preparation
Subfloor preparation and a smooth starting out point is essential to ensure a perfect finish for your floor. Our fitters will assess the subfloor to ensure its ready for your wood floor to be installed over the top.
2. Fitting
The main body of the floor is carefully installed by our experienced fitters keeping mess to a minimum.
3. Finishing Details
Next, they will work on borders, hearths, matwells, thresholds and any other intricate works that need an eye for detail.
4. Client Sign-Off
After clearing up their mess and giving the floor a good clean, our fitters will do a walk-around with the client to check they are happy with their new flooring.

The Perfect Fit
Our engineered planks are calibrated to thickness, and our mills use diamond tooling to cut precise tongue and groove joints. This creates long-lasting, stable flooring with superior precision to save time and hassle when fitting.

Ensuring your wood flooring is fitted properly is vital in achieving your desired look and means it will continue to look its best for years to come.
Trusting in the experience of a professional is the best way to ensure your new floor is fitted properly and securely.
Below are a few things to consider to help you prepare for your floor fitting.
Wooden floors should be installed at the final stages of a project after any plastering or concrete has
thoroughly dried out (allow a minimum of 1 month for every inch depth of concrete, screed or render).
Mist coats, final ceiling and wall coats should be complete before installation to minimize any potential
damage to the boards.
Skirting boards are best fitted after installing the wooden floor as they will cover the expansion gap
(approx. 15mm) left around the perimeter of the room.
We recommend adding 10% extra product to all orders to allow wastage.
5-7% wastage can be sufficient if there are minimal cuts required, i.e. you have large, square areas, and
the boards are end-matched, so there will be no need to cut back to joists or plan to fit over a solid
subfloor.
10% wastage should be added where more cuts are required, i.e. smaller areas and off square rooms
(commonly the case in most UK homes).
12-15% wastage should be added for Herringbone and Chevron floors. We strongly advise considering the layout of these floor types before confirming your order.
15-20% wastage should be added when ordering reclaimed products. Reclaimed products often require a more significant amount of wastage, primarily if being fitted directly over joists/battens, as you will need to cut back to these.
Generally, as a rule of thumb, the boards are laid the long length of the room. However, the room’s
prominent features can influence the decision, including a kitchen island/table/fireplace or external
doors. If you plan to fit the planks onto a solid subfloor, any direction is possible.
Flooring should not be delivered until the building has been closed in with windows and doors in place;
until cement work, plastering and all other “wet” work are complete and fully dry. As an absolute
minimum, you should allow 72 hours for acclimatisation or until Equilibrium Moisture Content is
achieved. If you are not sure how to check whether your flooring is fully acclimatised, contact our Customer Services Team who will be happy to advise you.
Ideally flooring should be carried out at the very final stages of your project. However, we realise this isn’t always possible and other building work is often still going on.
If this is the case, you should make sure your floor is properly protected to prevent damage.
We can do this, or it can be done by contractors on site but it is essential that the correct materials are used otherwise you can end up damaging the floor instead of protecting it.

Yes, you can — providing that your concrete or screed is clean, flat, dry, level, and free of laitance.
In most circumstances, we highly recommend fully bonding (gluing down) wood flooring to the concrete for a solid, high-end feel with no bounce.

Yes, you can ‘float’ the boards over an underlay. Floating is popular cost-effective choice for DIY wood flooring installation and there are certain situations where it can be a good option, such as when there is a need for noise reduction. That said, we highly recommend fully bonding the floor to a solid subfloor instead because it gives a more solid, durable feel than a floated floor, with less bounce underfoot.

If you have successfully installed wood flooring before and are confident in your abilities, it is possible for you to install the flooring yourself. However, we always highly recommend that wood flooring is installed by an experienced professional floor fitter.
To ensure your project comes together beautifully from start to finish, Chaunceys offer a complete supply and fit service for wood flooring, using our skilled craftspeople with decades of combined experience.
We believe fully bonding wood flooring to a solid subfloor is the best installation method. Whilst you can use other methods — such as secret screws/nails, or floating the boards on an underlay — using a flexible flooring adhesive to bond the flooring to a solid subfloor is our recommendation for achieving the best results.

Our team has a wealth of experience in transforming existing staircases to integrate them harmoniously with our wood flooring, and in using our high-quality planks to create striking, bespoke wooden feature staircases.

Generally, we recommend laying planks perpendicular to floor joists, in same direction as the longest wall of your room, i.e., parallel to the longest dimension.
For those who like to do things a little differently, another option is to install the flooring planks diagonally. This can be very effective in larger spaces.
